Pandemic Delays Canadian Clean Fuel Standard Proposed Regulations

Due to the extraordinary circumstances during the COVID-19 pandemic, Environment and Climate Change Canada will delay the publication of proposed regulations for the liquid fuel class of the Clean Fuel Standard to fall 2020.

The publication of proposed regulations for the liquid fuel class of the clean fuel standard has been delayed to the fall of 2020 from its previously anticipated release in the first quarter of this year.  However, the Canadian government still aims to introduce the liquid fuel regulations in 2022.

Next steps

  • Spring/summer2020: Engagement with the Technical Working Group on key regulatory design elements.
  • Fall2020: Publication of the proposed regulations for the liquid fuel class of the Clean Fuel Standard, in Part1 of theCanada Gazette, followed by a 75-day formal comment period.
  • Late 2021: Regulations for the liquid fuel class are finalized.
  • 2022: Regulations for the liquid fuel class come into force.
  • A more precise schedule for the development of gaseous and solid fuel regulations will be shared with the Technical Working Group in the coming months. In general, the schedule for these regulations will follow the timeline for the liquid fuel class regulations, plus 12months.
