US Renewable Energy Consumption Surpasses Coal
Annual US energy consumption from renewable sources during 2019 exceeded that of coal for the first time since 1885. The US Energy Information Agency (EIA) reported coal consumption declined nearly 15 percent compared to 2018, while total renewable energy consumption grew by 1 percent.
US energy consumption by source and sector shows that about 56 percent of US renewable energy is used in the electric power sector 22 percent in industrial, 12 percent in transportation, 7 percent in residential, and 2 percent in the commercial sector.
