Organic Retail Animal Protein Demand Outpaces Conventional at Supermarkets

 

Organic corn prices continue to go nowhere, as most of the action in organic grain trading is focused on organic soybeans and organic soybean meal. The concern remains amongst merchandisers that Indian exporters will not be able to get products to the US in a timely fashion. Imports are expected to continue to arrive in June and July from India, while corn and potentially soybeans are likely to arrive from Argentina during the Q3.

Demand at the Retail level should eventually put upward pressure on prices ahead of the Q4. The USDA increased its grocery store price forecast showing that retail food prices that are consumed at home will rise 2.5% to 3.5% in 2020, up from a forecast in May of 2% to 3% and 0.5% to 1.5% they forecast in April. Part of the increase has come because of stronger demand and part has been because of supply chain disruptions. In the Meats, poultry, and fish sub-segment, prices increased 4.2% month over month in May and are up nearly 10%…
