Organic Alternative Milk Sales Slide

Organic alternative milk sales appear to be trending lower and are capturing a smaller share of the total volume of organic milk and alternative milk sales in 2020. The alternative organic milk sales index generated by The Jacobsen uses popular organic prices of alternative milk products created from both organic soybeans and organic almonds. While there has been a rise in the demand for organic cow milk during the period covering the spread of COVID (March through June), this has not been replicated in the alternative organic milk space.

The market share of organic alternative milk has declined from more than 9% in mid-2018 to approximately 7% of total share during 2020. This appears to be a function of consumer demand for organic alternative milk. For the 12-months ending June of 2020, the Jacobsen organic alternative milk index is down nearly 10% year over year compared to the same period in 2019.
