Biodiesel margins rise, but window of opportunity limited
Biodiesel margins continued to rise during the week to Friday November 22. The bean oil/heating oil (BOHO) spread boosted margins by falling to its lowest level since August 27.
Renderer bleachable fancy tallow (BFT) jumped 5.5 cents Chicago today on five rail cars. Volume was quiet on the packer BFT side of the market and offers are likely closer to 54 cents after today’s trading. BFT is starting to bump up against a palm stearin ceiling. Prices for palm stearin into the Gulf are quoted at 52.5 cents per pound and with added freight to ship up to Chicago, values on par with BFT. Tallow buyers may start to take a hard look at reformulations in the near term.
Distiller’s corn oil (DCO) prices traded higher again today throughout the North American market. Offers were heard as high as 55 cents for April shipment, but no trading was confirmed at that level. Ethanol production was higher again last week. The EIA estimated US production at an average of 971,000 barrels per day, up from 938,000 the week prior and the highest weekly production this year.
