US Energy Consumption Fell a Record 7% in 2020

 

Renewable Fuels Use Rises 2% – EIA

Total Us energy consumption fell to 92.94 quadrillion British thermal units (quads) in the US during 2020.  British thermal units (Btu) are used in order to compare differing types of energy that are often measured in units that are not directly comparable, e.g., gallons of fuel compared to kilowatt-hours of energy.   

US energy consumption was down 7 percent relative to 2019 and marked the largest annual decrease in US energy consumption by the EIA. Coverage of consumption data began in 1949. The yearly decrease was primarily attributed to the economic responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, which began in the spring of 2020.

Within the transportation sector, energy consumption fell 15 percent to 24 quads.  The decline was almost entirely because of decreased petroleum use for travel….
