D4 and D5 Outpace a 5% Decline in Ethanol to Lift Overall Renewable Fuel RIN Gerneration in August

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported 1.55 billion gallons of renewable fuel were consumed during August, 1.1 percent below July but 6.7 percent above August 2020. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) credit generation of 1.71 billion RINs was 0.7 percent over July and 7.3 percent above August 2020.  The biomass-based diesel category (D4) led the way higher with RIN production rising 17.5 percent and gallons consumed up 16 percent.

August biomass-based diesel (D4) consumption increased from 230.2 million gallon in July to 267.4 million gallons.  During August, biodiesel use climbed two percent, renewable diesel use surged 52 percent, and renewable jet fuel declined 39 percent.
