Renewable Fuel Consumption Reaches 5-Month Low in September

 

Reduced D4 and D5 Consumption Contributes to Lower Renewable Fuel & RIN Gerneration in Sept

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported 1.47 billion gallons of renewable fuel consumed during September, 5.4 percent below August and fractionally less than in September 2020. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) credit generation of 1.62 billion RINs was 5.6 percent below August and two percent below September 2020.  Reduced biomass-based diesel (D4) and advanced biofuel (D5) production contributed significantly to the month over month decline.

September biomass-based diesel (D4) consumption of 244.3 million gallons was nine percent below August and 12 percent below September 2020.  During September, biodiesel use fell 8.5 percent, renewable diesel was down 8.6 percent, and renewable jet fuel declined 55 percent.
