Hog Slaughter Forecast Higher; August Cattle on Feed Lower

Stagnant pricing was indicated to start the week with most participants sitting on the sidelines, expecting price adjustments in the coming weeks.

For the week ending August 26th, 2023, hog slaughter is forecast at 2.400 million head, a 0.5 percent decrease from 2022 and in line with last week’s figures. According to the USDA Actual Slaughter Under Federal Inspection for August 5th, average live weights were at 279 pounds. Over the next six weeks, hog slaughter is projected to average 2.441 million head per week, around half a percent down from 2021 and 0.6 over 2022 levels for the respective time. (Fig. 1)
