Increased Layer Slaughter Results in Broiler Chick Hatches Dropping

With several participants attending the North American Rendering Associations’ meeting in Florida, light trade was reported on most animal protein items today following a burst of movement on Tuesday. The only adjustments to the ranges were on porcine and ruminant bloodmeal. Support in the market continues due to diminished offerings and active demand. A high of $1250/st was reported on IN and a high of $1200/st on IA/MN/NE.

For the week ending October 21, 2023, broiler slaughter was anticipated to be 168.239 million head, 4.1 percent below 2022 but 0.4 percent above the previous week (Fig 1). Over the next six weeks, broiler slaughter is projected to average 161.622 million head per week, down 2.9 percent from 2022 but up 2.4 percent compared to 2021.
