Rules governing organic livestock and poultry production have long been a source of friction between organic stakeholders, consumers, the animal rights lobby, and conventional livestock producers. After years of engagement between principal stakeholders, the USDA released an Membership required to view content. of the new Organic Livestock and Poultry final rule this week.
The final rule covers aspects of production including outdoor space requirements, living conditions for various species, maximum density regulations for poultry and guidelines for how animals are transported for slaughter. Under the new rule, organic poultry and livestock must have year-round access to the outdoors.
