Hog Slaughter Forecasted Above 2022 Into December

Pressure on ruminant meat and bonemeal continues to be reported on accounts of excess offerings from slowed/diminished export trade. Participants communicated low $200s per short ton on ruminant meat and bonemeal for Mo. River and Tx. Panhandle, though pricing levels under the published range could not be confirmed as of press time. On the opposite end of the spectrum, firmness was seen on bloodmeal. Porcine was flat for the day, while a high of $1200/st was communicated but could not be confirmed as bulk trade.

For the week ending December 2, 2023, hog slaughter is forecasted at 2.625 million head, 1.6 percent up from 2022 and 18.2 percent above last week due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Over the next six weeks, hog slaughter is expected to average 2.446 million head per week, 4.4 percent higher from 2022 and 1.1 percent up from 2021 levels for the respective time.
