Broiler Slaughter Forecasted below Prior Year into 2024

Market participants continue to communicate concern in regard to logistics though the holiday break. Negative pressure remains present on ruminant meat and bonemeal (MBM) with trading reported in a wide range out of the Mo. River and Tx. Panhandle market. Mixed species material was reported as low as $200/st FOB River today and pure beef as high as $300/st.

For the week ending December 23, 2023, broiler slaughter is anticipated to be 162.804 million head, 1.2 percent above 2022 but 0.9 percent lower from the previous week. Over the next six weeks, broiler slaughter is projected to average 159.088 million head per week, a drop of 1.0 from 2022. (Fig. 1)
