CARB Sets Date to Approve LCFS Amendments

CARB Sets Date to Approve LCFS Amendments

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced plans to hold a public hearing on March 21, 2024, to consider approving amendments to the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) program. The goal of these amendments is to update the LCFS and align it with CARB’s AB 32 Scoping Plan Update.

If adopted, the proposed amendments would require a 30-percent reduction in fuel carbon intensity (CI) by 2030 and a 90-percent reduction in fuel CI by 2045 from a 2010 baseline. This is up from current benchmark requirements that call for a 20-percent reduction by 2030.

To accommodate rapid advances in transportation fuel production and use, the proposed amendments include an Automatic Acceleration Mechanism (AAM). Beginning in 2027, the Executive Officer will announce on May 15 of each year, on the LCFS website, whether the AAM has been triggered and the cumulative number of times the AAM has been triggered.
