Diminished Trade Keeps Values Steady

Light trade was again indicated at mid-week. Trades reported for the day were within the previously set ranges. 

For the week ending February 17, 2024, broiler slaughter is anticipated to be 164.512 million head, 1.9 percent lower than 2023 and 0.6 percent down from the previous week. Over the next six weeks, broiler slaughter is projected to average 163.748 million head per week, down 1.4 percent from 2023. (Fig. 1)

Based on the Weekly Livestock, Poultry, and Grain market highlights from the USDA, year-to-date broiler slaughter as of February 12 was at 166.9 million head, up 1.5 percent from 2023 for the comparable time. Production for the same period was 2.3 percent lower, at 3.931 billion pounds. Year-to-date turkey production was at 446.51 million pounds, down 4.1 percent from 2023 for the similar time.
