D4 Biomass-Based Diesel Blending Generated 36% of the January RIN Total

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported 1.63 billion gallons of renewable fuel blended within the nation’s transportation fuel pool during January, a new monthly high for January. Blending was 12 percent below December 2023but five percent above January 2023. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) credit generation fell 13 percent to 1.9 billion RINs. This was eight percent above January 2023. Domestic renewable fuel production accounted for 94 percent of total RIN generation and 95 percent of the fuel consumed.

D6 conventional renewable fuel blending (largely ethanol) declined 4.5 percent to 1.2 billion gallons in January. This was down from December and fractionally below January 2023 blending of 1.21 billion gallons. Some renewable diesel, biodiesel, and renewable jet blending also appears within the D6 code. These amounts are generally less material to the category compared to the ethanol volumes.
