As a parallel to fraud in the organic feed space, organic textile markets also face considerable fraud. India is the largest producer of organic cotton globally. The Textile Exchange pegged annual growth in organic cotton markets in India at 48 percent in 2021, despite a global pandemic.
Some key stakeholders in the organic cotton supply chain – namely retailers in the fashion industry that upcharge for organic product lines – began to question the provenance of imported organic cotton. The growth, some said, was not congruent with actual organic cotton production in India. One brand discontinued their organic lines, telling customers that the amount of organic cotton sold each year far exceeded global production.
