Persistent high food prices erode organic demand

Organic poultry slaughter has stabilized after a steady decline that began in the fourth quarter of 2022. Food prices rose an astonishing 25% between 2019 and 2023 and have stubbornly refused to recede even to levels that would still represent healthy growth.

The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures in the February report released March 12 show the food index unchanged after rising 0.4% in January. On an annual basis, food prices are up 2%, led by sharper increases in the “food away from home” category.
