Avian Influenza discovered at Michigan organic layer farm

Avian influenza continues to decimate U.S. poultry flocks. April alone has seen cases in Michigan – including a large organic layer operator – and in Texas, at the largest egg producer in the U.S., Cal-Maine Foods.

Michigan dairy farmers were shocked to find avian flu in their herds prior to the poultry flock discovery by a company veterinarian on Saturday. Dairy cattle are not as vulnerable to the virus; poultry have a 90%+ mortality rate. The bad news here is that the virus has adapted to a new host, providing another vector for the disease in farm-heavy areas.
