Organic corn planting underway, progress good despite extreme weather

The 2024 cropping season is well underway in many parts of the country. 86% of the North Carolina corn crop has been planted, whereas nearly half of the crop in Iowa and Kansas are reportedly sown. Organic corn planting will trail behind conventional planting because organic seed corn is not treated with a fungicide, nor does it benefit from a side-dress of high-phosphorus starter fertilizer at planting, making it susceptible to cool soils. Organic corn planting progress is not separately reported by USDA.

Key organic corn producing regions like the mid-Atlantic and Northeast have only sown about 25% of the corn crop thus far. Pennsylvania and Ohio have made twice the progress with 2024 corn planting over the 5-year average of 14% and 12% respectively, but much of the organic corn crop has yet to be sown there.
