Year-to-date US cattle production lower than 2023 on lower cattle slaughter, higher weights

Prices for animal proteins were mostly flat on Monday July 1. Market sources reported limited trading due to the upcoming holiday on Thursday July 4.

Minnesota and the US Midwest were the only regions with reported price changes for the day.

Fastmarkets assessed feathermeal, fob Minnesota at $475-500 per short ton on Monday, down by $525-550 per ton on Friday June 28.

Fastmarkets assessed poultry by-product meal, pet food, 14 Ash 64 Pro, fob US Midwest at $675-725 per short ton, down from $700-750 per ton on Friday.

Fastmarkets’ research team forecasts cattle slaughter at 550,000 head in the week to Saturday July 6, up by 2.55% from the same period in 2023 but down by 9.69% week on week due to lower slaughter levels during the July 4 holiday weekend.
