Elevated cattle weights prop up beef production levels

Fastmarkets assessed feathermeal, fob US Midwest at $475-525 per short ton on Monday, down from $475-550 per short ton on Friday July 12. An offer of $425 per short ton was reported but could not be confirmed at the time of publication.

Fastmarkets research forecasts cattle slaughter at 615,000 head in the week to Saturday July 20, down by 1.74% from the corresponding period of 2023.

Over the next six weeks, cattle slaughter is expected to average 615,000 head per week, down by 0.36% year on year, according to Fastmarkets research.

Cattle slaughter for the week ended Saturday July 13 was at 506,000 head, according to the USDA’s Estimated Weekly Meat Production report, 1.70% lower than the corresponding week in 2023. Year-to-date cattle slaughter was at 16.70 million head, down by 4.5% year on year.
