The US biofuel industry consumed 1.81 billion lb of vegetable oil as a feedstock during May, up by 2.5% from April and by 2.3% from the 1.77 billion lb consumed in May 2023, according to data released on Friday July 31 by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
Total feedstock consumption reached 2.88 billion lb, down by 6% from April, and vegetable oils accounted for 63% of the total.
The decrease was largely caused by a 27% month-on-month decline in yellow grease consumption. Canola oil consumption rose by 10% on the month, attributable to renewable diesel plant consumption. Soybean oil consumption was nearly stable in May, with biodiesel plants using slightly more and renewable diesel plants using less.
