Organic crops thriving despite early season losses

Organic crops thriving despite early season losses

Organic corn and soybean crops are thriving in key production areas of the corn belt. Early season losses were significant for some growers in the Upper Midwest, but there is no indication currently that this will have a negative impact on overall supply.

Substantial or total crop loss was reported by some producers in Southern Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northern Iowa, and Eastern South Dakota.

Organic growers encountered some challenges accomplishing field work prior to the canopy closure. Weed pressure may be higher this year – common in wet years – but yields should at least be in line with average farm yields for most organic growers, and many will likely see above average yields.

On August 18, 67% of the US corn crop was rated good to excellent, while in Iowa, 77% of the 2024 crop was rated good to excellent. This exceeded 2023 ratings by 9%.
