The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) expects biomass-based diesel (BBD) consumption to account for 9% of total distillate fuel consumption in 2024 and 8% in 2025, according to the agency’s monthly Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) released on Tuesday October 8.

Total petroleum-based distillate consumption is expected to be up by 2.5 billion gallons in 2025 compared with 2024, without a similar correlated increase in BBD consumption. 2025 BBD consumption is projected at 5.32 billion gallons, down from 5.52 billion gallons estimated for 2024.

BBD is an environmentally sound substitute fuel for petroleum-based diesel and has experienced a significant increase in use due to the rapid adoption of renewable diesel (RD) since 2019. Biodiesel and RD are the two main BBD fuels.
