Light trading on Thursday; September livestock slaughter

There was limited price movement in the US animal protein market on Thursday October 24, with several market participants attending the North American Rendering Association (NARA) conference in California.

Slow trade was reported for the week, several sources told Fastmarkets.

September commercial cattle, hog slaughter
Commercial cattle slaughter for September was at 2.57 million head, based on the USDA’s Livestock Slaughter report released on October 24. This was down by 4.78% year on year and by 1.46% month on month.

Cattle slaughter for the first three quarters of 2024 totaled 23.87 million head, down by 3.34% from the corresponding period in 2023 and below the three-year average by 5.57%, 1.41 million head, for the respective period.
