California LCFS 2024 biodiesel production data shows steady canola oil demand, falling soybean oil use

Canola oil-based biodiesel accounted for 25.9 million gallons of Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) production during the first two quarters of 2024, which represented 21% of the biodiesel gallons produced, according to California Air Resources Board (CARB) data released on October 31.

This is similar to full-year 2023 production, which reached 55.8 million gallons and was 21% of biodiesel production for the year.

On the other hand, soybean oil-based biodiesel production has had a noticeable decline in 2024. Through the first two quarters of the year, 919,471 gallons of soybean oil-based biodiesel have been consumed, accounting for 1% of the total biodiesel gallons consumed. This is down from 2023, when soybean oil-based biodiesel gallons accounted for 5% of the biodiesel market share.
