Organic market participants have told Fastmarkets they are closely watching the political discourse following the decisive election win by President Elect Donald Trump in November. The looming threat of tariffs has all agricultural markets paying attention.
Participants do not recall the frenetic pace of cabinet level appointments and policy projections between a presidential election and inauguration. World leaders have been lining up to congratulate Trump, and Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau ventured to Mar a Lago last week after the president elect’s threat to impose 25% tariffs on the US’s closest trading partners.
Canadian traders have since received an influx of inquiries from Chinese buyers for conventional soybeans and other commodities. China was also threatened with tariffs, where buyers are busily developing contingency plans.
