Winter weather impacts poultry production; December cattle, hog slaughter under prior year

Sources continued to report limited trade for US animal proteins on Thursday January 23, leaving most prices flat day on day.

The only product under negative price pressure was poultry-by-product pet food grade (PBP PFG), which continues to have fluctuations in slaughter levels due to the Mid-South and Southeast winder weather, according to market sources.

Fastmarkets’ daily assessment for poultry by-product pet food, Midsouth was $475-575 per short ton on Thursday, down from $500-575 per ton on Wednesday January 22.

Commercial cattle slaughter for December was at 2.54 million head, based on the USDA’s Livestock Slaughter report released on Thursday, down by 2% year on year and by 1.04% month on month.
