Animal protein trade volume down with IPPE attendance; lower cattle on feed numbers due to fewer heifers

Sources continued to report limited trade for US animal proteins on Monday January 27; several market participants were reported to be traveling to attend the International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE), leaving most prices flat day on day.

Cattle on feed diminished in January
Total on-feed cattle inventory — which are steers and heifers for the slaughter market being fed a ration of grain, silage, hay and/or protein supplement — totaled 11.82 million head on January 1, according to the USDA’s Cattle on Feed report for Friday January 24. This is down 0.90% year on year, or 107,000 head, and under the previous month by 1.33%, or 159,000 head.

Cattle marketings for December — which are steers and heifers for a slaughter market shipped out of feedlots — were lower by 1.04% year on year, to 1.74 million head.
