EU organic merchandisers anxiously await tariff threats

Organic market participants are enduring the chaotic fallout from US tariff action and struggling to get a handle on the new normal. Many that we speak with agree that there is both opportunity and risk in the chaos, but it is challenging to make projections and difficult to plan properly.

While tariffs on goods from our North American trading partners are on hold for 30 days, they have been enacted on Chinese goods. China has swiftly retaliated against the 10% levies, and this reaction may inform the Trump administration on next steps with Canada and Mexico.

The impetus for levying tariffs is to use them to compel governments to act on immigration pressure and narcotics trafficking. China is suspected of enabling the export of precursor chemicals for fentanyl, and both Mexico and Canada are said to be falling short in their efforts to prevent them and fentanyl from entering the US.
