Hemp was routinely mistaken for MJ during the 2019 growing season.  Thieves and professional law enforcement alike cannot distinguish hemp from high-THC MJ.  That technical issue has yet to be solved on a national level for law enforcement, the ability to determine whether it is high cannabinoid hemp or THC. This was true for the Kern County Sherriff’s Department last year, when they oversaw the destruction of over 500 acres of hemp belonging to Apothio LLC.

Kern County, CA agriculture dwarfs the agricultural receipts of many US States.  The county generates more than $7.5 billion from the sector, about the same as Mississippi and Louisiana agriculture combined.  Just for comparison, North Dakota’s gross annual ag receipts are around $8 billion.  Kern County itself has allowed for hemp production in agriculturally zoned areas, but local politics driven by ag interests…
