Organic corn prices are facing downward pressure in the North East of the US. Prices in the Pennsylvania area are coming under a new round of pressure. Merchandisers are quoting Q4 corn near $340 per short ton down from $360 per short ton 8-weeks ago. This puts Q4 organic corn in the mid-west between $7 and $7.25 depending on freight.
If prices continue to move lower, they should begin to alter the transition from conventional to organic. The spread between the price of organic corn mid-west and conventional corn (board) has slipped to the lowest levels seen in the past 3-years. The driver has been the decline in organic corn prices. Despite organic corn prices moving lower declining approximately 13% year to date is 2020, the number of organic farmers who might consider planting organic corn has increased.
