Leather Demand Driving Prices Higher

Leather demand from the furniture business in China remains firm and the auto business continues to be very strong. Demand from the footwear sector is gaining momentum as evidenced by some footwear designers ordering leather well into next season.   

Steer hide prices were up today, with light and regular weight categories posting steady to a few dollars higher. Light weight Heavy Native Steers (HNS-L) were $1 up, while regular weight (HNS-R) were up $0.50. Heavy Native Dairy Steers (HNDS) were unchanged, while regular weight Heavy Texas Steers (HTS-R) were reported steady and jumbo weight (HTS-J) were up $1. Light weight and regular weight Butt Branded Steers (BBS-L & BBS-R) were $0.50 down. Light weight Colorado Branded Steers (CBS-L) jumped $4 while regular weight (CBS-R) rose $3.50 and jumbo (CBS-J) increased $1.
