The news cycle of recent weeks has been heavily laden with discussions about coronavirus funding within an omnibus spending bill.  We learned yesterday that the Senate had advanced legislation, both parties calling it a bipartisan victory.  With a penchant for drama, Trump secretly recorded a video last night admonishing congress for not increasing the direct payments to eligible taxpayers, among other things.   

This is an example of the political genius that has given the president the traction he has had enjoyed over his political career.  Republicans were none too happy with the monkey wrench out of left field, a threat to veto the bill unless direct payments are essentially doubled.  In an unprecedented move, he vetoed a bipartisan defense bill, giving lawmakers plenty to think about.  Typically, a White House legislative liaison would work with congress to avoid messiness….
