Inadequate Cannabis Policy a Threat to Hemp Producers

Inadequate Cannabis Policy a Threat to Hemp Producers

Craft cannabis flower markets on both sides of the THC divide will experience sustained growth in coming years.  For as long as the incongruency of federal and state cannabis laws persist, MJ markets will be whipsawed by disparate political forces.  MJ markets will also remain siloed and face stiff competition from black market MJ, while Delta-8 THC (∆8) infused flower nips at the heels of the dispensary economy.

Meanwhile, hemp flower continues to grow in popularity and distribution, enduring less headwinds than MJ and enjoying the occasional breeze from astern.  Hemp flower is a leading category in hemp markets, and it offers some insight into how efficiently sanctioned interstate MJ markets could expand.  These are not new trade flows; they’ve been well traveled for many years.  California remains the source of much of US black-market MJ, but Oregon’s production has ramped up considerably.
