Nanocellulose

Nanocellulose

Nanocellulose technology has existed for decades, but much progress has been made in the last decade.  The technology spans an astonishing range of applications, from tissue products and absorbent products like diapers and feminine hygiene products, to high-tech applications like bone scaffolding and energy storage, owing to its electrically conductive properties.

Properties of nanocellulose are dependent on source and isolation technique, and one group of researchers at NC State’s College of Natural Resources are working to develop nanocellulose tissue products from hemp.  Sanitary disinfecting wipes for surfaces and personal care wipes have witnessed a demand spike on the heels of the pandemic.
