States’ Impact on Hemp Markets

In previous commentary we’ve noted the outsized impact the federal government has on market development for agricultural commodities.  The emphasis of federal spending is now shifting to demographics that haven’t historically benefitted equitably from USDA programs, like people of color, and smaller scale operators.  Last week’s commentary on infrastructure funding for small meat processors is a good example of recent funding priorities. 

There is no question whether the federal government will be a key factor in hemp market development.  Hemp operators are well positioned going forward in the new policy landscape, though first movers are fighting considerably stiffer headwinds than a diversified farmer may encounter in five years’ time.
