As the pressure increases on cannabinoid hemp producers around the US, operators on the fiber and grain sides are distancing themselves from the segment. There is more crossover here at the early stages of industry development, but the segments will diverge in coming years.
In the future, there could be increased dual-cropping or tri-cropping, the former being the more realistic cultural practice – given the inherent limitations of hemp genetics – and the fundamental conflicts between key characteristics. For example, high-quality bast fiber is harvested early in the reproductive cycle – well before any seed is ripened.
Cannabinoids also peak after the ideal harvest window for bast fiber, but there is potential value in the cannabinoid profile of younger plants, especially if CBG demand grows.
