At the behest of the President, The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – under the direction of Health and Human Services (HHS) – is carrying out an eight-step review into current MJ scheduling. Biden announced this in October 2022, along with mass pardons for federal MJ convictions.
Under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), cannabis has long fallen under Schedule 1, the class of most dangerous drugs that include fentanyl and other opiates. This is hardly congruent with the current view of public health officials, physicians, the World Health Organization (WHO), and most of the electorate. Hemp has added tailwinds to shifting sentiments around cannabis, but billion-dollar state markets have provided steady trade winds.
