Romanian Hemp Revival

Romanian Hemp Revival

Romania has become the most important hemp yarn exporter to the U.S., with exports of 100-180 mt annually.  This is roughly double that of China’s exports over the 3 year period 2020-2023. Romania has maintained hemp production historically, while other countries discontinued cannabis cultivation altogether.

The fiber hemp segment has been in decline in Romania for the last several decades due to depreciating facilities, and decreased demand for hemp yarn. Romanian farmers plant roughly 3600 acres of hemp annually.  30 years ago, Romania was the largest hemp fiber exporter in Europe and the fourth largest globally.  In 1990, production reached almost 40,000 acres.
