North Carolina Eyes Hemp as Tobacco Replacement

Tobacco is an important historical crop for North Carolina.  Like other states, such as Kentucky, finding alternative crops to tobacco has been a priority for NC state agencies and non-profits like the Golden Leaf Foundation and NC Tobacco Trust Fund, both of which have distributed tens of millions of dollars to NC entities to develop alternative crops and industry in the state.

North Carolina is by far the country’s largest tobacco producer.  The industry has consolidated over the years, and only 20 years ago mountain Burley growers in NC were growing several acres of Burley tobacco to supplement their meager wages, or pay for Christmas.  Most of the state’s production is in flu-cured tobacco in Eastern NC.
