Canadian Hemp Exports Rise

Canada did not accidentally come to dominate North American hemp markets.  Canadian growers have been planting hemp, developing cultivars, and mastering the agronomics of the crop for almost 25 years.  The movement to legalize hemp in the U.S. caught Canadians’ attention, and it prompted some stakeholders to accelerate their efforts to gain market share in emerging hemp markets.

Hempseed has been the most successful of Canada’s hemp exports. Canadian operators developed Korean markets for hempseed exports when some Koreans abandoned fish oil for the polyunsaturated fatty acids found in hempseed. China quickly captured that market and Canadian hempseed inventories backed up, slowing growth in the segment while they worked through a glut.
