Hide Shipments in Route to Be Impacted By Possible UAW Strike

Hide trading was slow in the US today while several prepare to travel to Shanghai for the All China Leather Fair (ACLE). Buyers have said they look forward to meeting sellers in person to discuss discounting trades.
A few sources reported to The Jacobsen that if a strike of the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) is carried through, current hide shipments may be impacted as well as new purchases. An auto tanner and a US hide seller shared that it was likely that Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) would hold shipments that would be delivered during the strike and stop all new purchasing activity. This would be to ensure no inventory build up for the buyers, but would lead to potential inventory builds on the packing/processing and tanning side of the business. If the strike is authorized, it will be held mid-September.
