Automotive Tanners Active in Market This Week

Hide trading was active today for cow, butt branded steers (BBS) and branded steers. Some sellers reported strong demand for lower priced hides, selling good volume at steady to current market price levels. Steer hides are more difficult to sell at steady levels, but some packers managed trading butt branded steers at steady to yesterday’s price level and branded steers up $1.50 from yesterday’s close. The BBS trade was $0.50 higher than price levels from two days prior.
Automotive and furniture upholstery demand were firm this week for hides to be delivered prior to Chinese Lunar New Year. Footwear tanners remain absent from the US hide market or the bids are several dollars lower than least reported price levels.
