Mexico’s Ban on GMO Corn Imminent

Mexico’s Ban on GMO Corn Imminent

Non-GMO corn markets are niche markets that rely on the national policy of importing nations. Reasons for banning GMO crops range from concerns over their interaction with natural ecosystems, to food security and an aversion to dependence on a select few corporations or technologies.

There are noteworthy benefits to non-GMO corn varieties that some feeders leverage through their own production, in the absence of a developed supply chain. Protein levels in many non-GMO varieties are more than 25 percent higher than transgenic crops. Increased fiber, antioxidants, and palatability are all potential benefits to livestock producers. Elite soybean producers chasing record yields often look to non-GMO varieties to achieve their goal because of superior yield potential.
