Sellers of cow hides reported an active week of hide sales in following the New Year holiday. Demand from tanneries in Asia has been firm with many buying hides for delivery after the Lunar New Year holiday. Upholstery tanners for furniture and automotive have leather orders and are looking for hide material to match the demand they are seeing for finished material. Some other cow hide sellers shared that activity was a bit slower than what other received, but the business they had closed was at steady to current market price levels.
Branded steer hides, such as Branded Steers, Heavy Texas Steers and Colorado Branded Steers, remain under pressure. Each week buyers bid for this material several dollars lower than last sold and show little urgency in buying these selections.
Tanners in Mexico remain inactive while they continue their holiday closures. US suppliers expected automotive tanners would resume their hide shipments this week, but very few tanners did so.
