Mostly Flat Call on Continued Light Trade

Values continued to be reported as generally flat for mid-week, with the animal protein market called quiet. Deals heard at $150/st for ruminant meat and bonemeal could not be confirmed as of press time. Lower trades on porcine meat and bonemeal were indicated for Mo. River, widening the range to $250-345/st. Ruminant meat and bonemeal, rail U.S. East delivered, was reportedly offered at $345-350/st, dropping the range in the region.

Several locations are reportedly starting to get back to normal today or tomorrow, with hopes that logistical issues will resolve sooner than later. 

For the week ending January 13, 2024, broiler slaughter is anticipated to be 172.539 million head, less than a quarter percent higher than 2023 and 5.8 percent higher from the previous week. Over the next six weeks, broiler slaughter is projected to average 167.363 million head per week, a drop of less than a quarter percent from 2023. (Fig. 1)
