Organic Ag Fares Well Amid Pricing Declines

Organic agriculture had a good year in 2023 from a policy and funding perspective. As prices declined over the course of the year, the USDA was busily rolling out long term programs meant to bolster organic markets for the long term.  Early in 2023, the Strengthening Organic Enforcement Act was introduced by USDA, laying the groundwork for perhaps the most significant change to global organic trade.

The USDA also released long-awaited Organic Livestock and Poultry Standards in 2023.  These were seen as an essential move to protect organic meat, poultry, egg, and dairy markets.  Products in these markets are produced using disparate production practices, creating a confusing, multi-tiered marketplace with ancillary certifications for concerns like animal welfare.
