U.S. vegetable oil consumption declined 11 percent on the month in October 2023 to 1.996 billion pounds due to a decline in biomass-based diesel production, the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) latest Monthly Biofuels Capacity and Feedstocks Report showed. October vegetable oil use was 243 million pounds below September but one percent above October 2022. Soybean oil, distillers’ corn oil, and canola oil were the primary oils consumed during the month.
Within biomass-based diesel (BBD) production, soybean oil was the most widely consumed feedstock at 1.062 billion pounds, followed by yellow grease at a record high of 668 million pounds, corn oil at 324 million pounds, and canola oil at 286 million pounds. Domestic BBD feedstock consumption declined in October from September’s record high of 3.8 billion pounds to 3.55 billion pounds. This was despite record high yellow grease and used cooking oil demand during the month.
